Over time, similar groups emerged nationwide, offering safe spaces and support for families. Following the 1979 National March for Gay and Lesbian Rights, representatives met in Washington, DC. By 1981, PFLAG became a national organization. It was during the 1990s, it expanded its mission to include bisexual and transgender individuals, advocated for Safe Schools legislation.ย Plus, raised awareness about hate crimes and LGBT teen suicide. PFLAG remains a pioneer in promoting dignity, acceptance, and equality for all.
