Two recent policy changes helps unaccompanied homeless teens and young adults complete their FAFSA application for financial aid determination:
1. The removal of the definition for “youth” from the FAFSA application effective the 2018-2019 academic year. This means that unaccompanied homeless teens are able to apply as independent students for college financial aid. Unaccompanied homeless teens must receive verification for FAFSA from their school district homeless liaison office.
2. States must describe how homeless teens will receive assistance from school counselors to advise, prepare, and improve their readiness for college. Your school district homeless liaison office can facilitate your connection to your high school counselor.
